An esteemed Russian general has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The event happened on Monday morning when an IED concealed beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Authorities stated that one line of inquiry suggests the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.

Location of the Incident

Personnel have been dispatched to the location, which is reportedly in a southern district of the capital.

Accounts state the explosion took place in a vehicle lot near a residential building.

Series of Assaults

Since the onset of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.

This latest event comes after other serious incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a source from Ukraine previously connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.

The conflict has increasingly seen shadowy operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death remains ongoing.
