In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
