A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 others sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
The detonation occurred as police and firefighters approached the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for three siblings who were older adults.
Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Two individuals got detained at the scene and a third person who ran away subsequent to the incident was found soon after. All three have been admitted to hospital.
The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area displayed the building left as a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.
The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts accumulated by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member caused the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the minister confirmed.
Those injured by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
The prosecutor believed the detonation had happened on a story above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being opened”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed Italian media, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
