Former UK Serviceman Accused of Killing Kenyan Female Shows Up in Courtroom

A man has shown up before a judge as extradition hearings began in the investigation of Agnes Wanjiru, a female from Kenya who was murdered near a British army base in 2012.

Robert Purkiss, thirty-eight, who is originally from Greater Manchester region, was presented at Westminster magistrates court on Friday, and informed the court he intended to contest the extradition. It is understood that he was arrested on Thursday evening.

A detention order for the defendant was issued by a Nairobi court in September. The prosecution stated before the Kenyan court that Purkiss had been facing a sole charge, of homicide, and that the Kenyan authorities would request his deportation to stand trial.

The defendant served formerly as a army medic with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the infantry regiment for the English northwest, including on missions to Afghanistan.

Wanjiru, twenty-one, a hair stylist who had a infant daughter, went missing after a evening out, and her remains was discovered two months later in the area of the hotel where she had last been seen.

Nobody had previously been taken into custody or accused in relation to her demise. Purkiss’s arrest came after a new police inquiry, which followed a article in the year 2021 by a Sunday newspaper, in which the media outlet contacted several current and former soldiers in the military group.

The investigation has been led by investigators from Kenya, which, under a bilateral security treaty, maintains prosecutorial power in the case.
