Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

The Cause of the Latest Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered remarks after Denver's remarkable 33-32 win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the player and his mentor.
