JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution is not entirely an original movie. Rather, the recent film from the Jujutsu Kaisen supernatural series is a compilation of the anime's second season merged with the initial episodes of its upcoming season, which begins the Culling Games storyline from the original manga. This positions Execution, which recently received a new trailer, the first way to watch the start of the forthcoming season ahead of its 2026 January debut. The movie premieres in Japanese theaters on November 7, and in North American regions on December 5.
In the Culling Games storyline, Special Grade sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu makes his entrance into the television series and is assigned by sorcery authorities to execute his classmate Yuji Itadori. Their highly anticipated battle occurs for the first time on the big screen, and if the artists at the studio have an exceptional piece as installments 40 and 41 waiting in the wings for fans this end-of-year period, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may prove to be the gift that everyone has hoped for.
"The Thunderclap sequence" from season 2 is frequently praised as one of the greatest sequences in anime history, notwithstanding the significant debate in 2023 when the series first premiered. It was stated that the animation team were enduring tight schedules to the extent, and the broadcast edition that aired at the time was unfinished and reportedly not what the animators initially intended.
The scene features a much-hyped confrontation between two strong jujutsu users, Sukuna versus Mahoraga. It features experimental animation, masterful camera work, and dynamic fight choreography. A later Blu-ray release allowed the team to include extra footage to flesh out the conflict. So it was plausible Execution could improve the battle even more. However, examining the latest preview, it's hard to tell if that fight has undergone further polishing. It'd be a shame if it was not, because a sequence that grand has to be experienced on the biggest screen with the finest quality available.
The second installment of JuJutsu Kaisen boosted the show to become 2024's anime of the year, and when episodes 40 and 41 were aired consecutively, it was the subject of discussion for weeks in the anime community. Fans were aware of the issues behind the scenes, which made them admire what they saw even more. People anxiously checked to see if the Blu-ray, made available on March 18, would feature extra content to the sequence or to see if it was refined somewhat, and were overjoyed to see just that, alongside reshades, more motion, and altered color palette.
But the Blu-ray can only touch up what has previously shown in the original airing, whereas the film has the opportunity to do the sequence justice with more adjustments and freshly created footage.
At present, these pair of installments serve as the masterpiece of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be handled with care by the animation team, especially considering the controversy they encountered at the time. It's captured the interest of anime fans all over the world, and the Culling Games storyline is a highly awaited story of the coming year. If Mappa wants to kick off the year perfectly, run back the anime's greatest sequence once again in movie houses with the best interpretation we've witnessed to date.
