In the wake of a crucial victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, the reigning world champion has significantly closed the gap in the title race. He is now positioned just a dozen points behind leader the British driver and ahead of teammate his McLaren rival, the stage is set for a electrifying three-way championship battle at the renowned Yas Marina Circuit.
His most recent win was far from conventional. Even though he delivered a masterful drive for Red Bull, the race outcome was largely determined by a controversial strategic move from the McLaren team. Opting to stay on track during an early safety car period, the team presented the advantage to Verstappen, who pounced perfectly.
"I'm looking forward to it, I'm happy to go there and have a go at it," the driver said. "I approach it with just good vibes. I try everything I can but at the same time, even without the title, I still know that I had an amazing season."
This outlook according to him removes much of the stress. The aim for the final round is clear: to get the most from each opportunity from himself and the car.
The incredible part of Verstappen's championship charge so impressive is the distance he has come back. After the Zandvoort round in August, he was an enormous 104 points behind the then-leader Oscar Piastri and had publicly written off his championship hopes.
The shift began with substantial car developments introduced by his team at the Italian Grand Prix. Modifications to the car's floor and aerodynamic package solved persistent balance issues, allowing Verstappen to feel comfortable with the car once more.
Since that point, his form has been completely formidable, securing five wins and multiple podiums. He was quick to highlight the unified work behind this resurgence.
"We have achieved victories where maybe we shouldn't have, by making the correct decision as a team," he explained. "The way I work with my race engineer and the every member... we are perfectly synchronized."
As the teams arrive in Abu Dhabi, the championship picture is crystal clear.
The pressure now shifts on McLaren, who have let a big points cushion slip away due to costly errors, including a double disqualification in Las Vegas. For Verstappen, being the hunter allows for liberation, turning the ultimate Grand Prix into a straight opportunity to attack with everything to gain.
