This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
